Yorkshire Grammar Schools 11 Plus: FSCE, GL, and the Ripon Format Change Nobody Told You About

Yorkshire is the region where the standard 11+ advice breaks down most badly. Most of its grammar schools do not test verbal and non-verbal reasoning at all — they test English, maths and creative writing. One major school runs a different provider entirely, and changed its format from September 2026. And there is no county-wide registration: every deadline is the school's own.

Short answer: Yorkshire's grammar schools do not all use the same test. A North and West Yorkshire cluster — including Heckmondwike, Crossley Heath, North Halifax, Skipton Girls' and Ermysted's — uses FSCE papers in English, maths and creative writing. A cluster of North and West Yorkshire grammar schools use FSCE papers in English, maths and creative writing for 2027 entry. They are Heckmondwike Grammar School, The Crossley Heath School, North Halifax Grammar School, Skipton Girls' High School and Ermysted's Grammar School.

Why this catches families out: the overwhelming majority of 11+ practice books, apps and tutoring packages sold nationally are built around verbal and non-verbal reasoning, because that is what GL and CEM areas test. A Yorkshire family who buys the standard bundle can spend a year preparing for question types their child will never see — while never once practising the creative writing task that actually forms part of the assessment. Ripon Grammar: different provider, and a changed format

North Yorkshire Council confirms three selective schools in its area: Ripon Grammar School, Ermysted's Grammar School and Skipton Girls' High School. Of these, Ripon is the exception on testing — it uses GL Assessment rather than FSCE, and the Council organises its entrance test.

Crucially, from September 2026 Ripon's test format changed, to a structure described as "Verbal Skills" and "Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) and Mathematics" — combining assessment elements with Key Stage 2 curriculum content. For 2027 entry, the registration deadline was 30 June 2026 and the test was held on Saturday 12 September 2026.

Check the date on any Ripon guidance you read. Material written before the change describes a different paper structure. Preparation built on the old format will misallocate time — particularly by under-weighting the Key Stage 2 maths content now sitting alongside non-verbal reasoning.

Ermysted's and Skipton Girls' set their own timetables

North Yorkshire Council organises testing for Ripon Grammar only. It is explicit that Ermysted's Grammar School and Skipton Girls' High School arrange their own tests, with different timescales and deadlines, and that applicants should contact those schools directly.

The Council also makes a point worth quoting to every Yorkshire family: "Registering for and sitting an entrance test is not an application" for a place. Reaching the cut-off allows a child to be considered; it does not secure admission if the school is oversubscribed.

Proximity in the North: big catchments, different maths

Northern catchments often work on a scale unfamiliar to London families. Ripon Grammar's oversubscription priority groups for day places include looked-after children, those with medical or social needs, catchment area residents, staff children, and then children outside the catchment. It is the familiar shape, drawn across a far larger rural geography.

Ermysted's catchment is reported to cover a spread of Craven villages and settlements around Skipton, rather than a tight urban radius. Embsay, Gargrave, Grassington, Carleton, Cracoe, Sutton-in-Craven and Threshfield all feature.

The trade-off to weigh honestly: a large rural catchment means proximity is less likely to exclude you than in Bexley or Redbridge, but the daily journey can be substantial, and rural bus provision varies. Before ranking a school first, map the actual door-to-door journey at 8am on a wet Tuesday in February, not the mileage.

Buy the right practice material for the right school. A Heckmondwike or Skipton family needs English, maths and creative writing practice. A Ripon family needs GL-style Verbal Skills plus NVR and maths. Generic reasoning bundles serve neither well.
Do not neglect creative writing. It is assessed at the FSCE schools and is the component most often left entirely unpractised, because national material rarely includes it.
Track each school's own deadline separately. There is no single county registration. Ermysted's and Skipton Girls' set their own timescales; Ripon's is organised by the Council. Applying to more than one means tracking more than one calendar.
Remember that sitting the test is not applying. You still need to name the school on your Common Application Form by 31 October. Families have sat the test and then missed the actual application.
Map the real journey before ranking preferences. Rural catchments are generous but the commute is genuinely long. Do the trip at the actual time of day before committing.

If you are sitting FSCE papers, practise writing to a time limit. Creative writing under exam conditions is a skill of its own — planning quickly, then writing steadily, beats starting immediately and running out of ideas.
Read widely to build writing range. The strongest creative writing comes from students who have absorbed a lot of good sentences, not from students who have memorised a formula.
For Ripon, do not skip the maths. The current format pairs non-verbal reasoning with Key Stage 2 maths, so curriculum confidence counts directly towards your score.
Check with your parents which test you are actually sitting. Yorkshire schools use different providers. Practising the wrong format is the most frustrating possible way to lose marks.

Segment your Yorkshire students by target school before planning any scheme of work. FSCE and GL students need genuinely different programmes, and mixing them into one reasoning-led course short-changes both.
